I am not quite sure where the summer went but somehow there are just 14 days left before I leave for school. I am feeling apprehensive about this coming school year for the sole reason of possibly overcommitting myself. Instead of my usual two clubs, I will be in a leadership role for four clubs. Even though I won’t be leading any of them myself it will still be a lot of work.
At the same time, I am beyond excited. I know keeping myself busy during my senior year will be the best thing for me. Once I start student teaching I will need someone to socialize with other than first graders and teachers. I am eager to start blocking time off in my calendar for the various clubs I will be doing.
When I look back at myself as a freshman, or even in high school, I thought of leadership roles as intimidating and thought I was not capable of being in one. I was always fine with staying in the background. I can’t believe I thought that way. I love being in a leadership role. It is not about the ability to make the final call. Instead, it is all about seeing the product come together. It is rewarding to see something you worked so hard on be a success.
My senior year of high school I had a glimpse into this realization when I became editor in chief for my school’s literary magazine. I really enjoyed working with other students and our faculty advisor. Being in a leadership role in college gives me a similar feeling. The faculty and administration become more approachable and I am able to see so many projects become successes. I look forward to seeing two new projects become successes this year. I can’t wait to see what new ideas Hillel board comes up with and how much money we can raise at Brandeis Dance Marathon for Children’s Hospital.
Some might say I’m overreaching on what I can physically do. I don’t think thats the case. I know my time management skills I learned will come in very handy. Attention rising college students or current college students: do not be afraid to take on a leadership role and learn time management skills. Use a calendar, use multiple calendars, whatever works for you but make it happen and soon. I learned this skill in the middle of my freshman year and I wish I had learned it the first week of classes.

So exciting! I spent the first half of my college years being quiet, but realized that I got much more out of life by actually participating. 😀

Isn’t looking back on everything totally nuts? Time flies. I’m going to be a Junior and just like you I can remember the first day of my freshman year like it was yesterday…You’re going to kill it this year!
This is so exciting!! I didn’t take on many leadership roles in college, but sort of wish I had. I had a sort of unconventional college career. Being a leader in high school was very important to me and I’m glad you have found it this year!
